What is a backflow preventer?

A backflow preventer is a mechanical valve installed on irrigation systems that blocks contaminated or recycled water from reversing direction and entering the home's drinking water supply.

A backflow preventer is a one-way valve installed where an irrigation system connects to a building's potable water supply. It allows water to flow outward to sprinklers and landscape irrigation but prevents siphoning that could force fertilizer, pesticides, soil, or other contaminants back into the drinking water line during pressure drops or system failures.

In the Charlotte Metro area, North Carolina state plumbing code and local municipalities require backflow prevention on all irrigation systems that connect to municipal or private water supplies. Landscape designers and contractors must specify and install approved devices at the meter or main shutoff where the irrigation line branches off. The type required depends on the irrigation setup: dedicated meters typically need reduced-pressure zone (RPZ) devices, while smaller systems may use simpler check valves, though RPZ units offer greater protection.

Without a backflow preventer, pressurized spray heads or drip lines can create siphoning conditions, especially if the main water supply experiences a pressure loss. This poses a genuine public health risk, making the device both a safety requirement and a code compliance measure that landscape professionals must address during system design and installation. Local inspectors check for proper backflow prevention before approving irrigation permits.
