What is drip irrigation?

Drip irrigation is a low-volume watering system that delivers water through tubing and emitters directly to the soil near plant roots, reducing water waste compared to spray sprinklers.

Drip irrigation applies water at ground level through a network of tubing, drip lines, and small emitters positioned near individual plants or along planting beds. Instead of spraying water into the air like conventional pop-up or spray sprinkler heads, drip systems release water slowly and directly into the soil, where roots absorb it. This targeted approach minimizes evaporation and runoff losses.

The system uses minimal water pressure and can be operated on timers to deliver consistent moisture over hours or days. Drip tubing can be laid on the surface, buried shallow, or concealed under mulch. Emitters regulate flow rates, typically in the range of 0.5 to 2 gallons per hour, depending on plant type and spacing.

Landscape designers in the Charlotte area value drip irrigation for its water efficiency, especially during hot summers and drought-prone periods. The method also reduces fungal disease on foliage since water stays at soil level and does not wet leaves.
