What is a rain garden?

A rain garden is a shallow, planted basin designed to collect and absorb stormwater runoff from roofs, driveways, and other hard surfaces before it enters storm drains or local waterways.

A rain garden sits as a shallow depression, typically 4 to 8 inches deep, planted with native shrubs, perennials, and grasses that thrive in both wet and dry conditions. Rather than letting stormwater run directly into streets or storm drains, the garden captures it, allowing the soil and plants to filter pollutants and excess water. This process reduces strain on municipal drainage systems and replenishes groundwater.

In residential settings across Charlotte Metro, rain gardens serve multiple purposes. They reduce erosion on slopes, lower the risk of flooding during heavy rain events, and filter nutrients and sediment that would otherwise contaminate nearby streams and wetlands. The plants also attract pollinators and improve the visual appeal of a yard.

Rain gardens work best positioned downhill from roof runoff or at the low point of a driveway, where water naturally collects. Their effectiveness depends on proper soil composition, appropriate plant selection, and positioning relative to the water source.
